Coffee News: The Short Report

There’s a lot of coffee related news online. We’d like to condense some of the most interesting stories for you.

On a positive note: Coffee helps your long term memory. Interestingly, this study shows that drinking the crazy caffeinated drinks (Red Bull, Monster, etc) does not contain the same components that might fight against/prevent Alzheimers. However, coffee components prove to be helpful…so drink up!

College grads and coffee seem to go well! This innovation with cups seems pretty rad. Maybe one day Coffeehouse will use them…

Another cool innovation related to your morning cup of coffee. This seems like a great way to wake up in the morning. If it only it picked out an outfit too?

While we really dig Katz Coffee’s roasts, if you have ever thought about roasting your own,  this guy might be your inspiration. However, roasting is tricky and time consuming. So, while we are wowed by Kupovic’s gusto, we’re not going to jump on it anytime soon.

On a more dangerous, but less serious note: What Not to Do with Your Coffee Grinder. Firecrackers and coffee grinders don’t mix well. This coffee related Fourth of July incident, while patriotic, seems rough. However, if you are looking to clean your grinder after a similar, but less dangerous incident, try running a little uncooked rice through it. We recommend that you do this every once in a while, or if you switch flavors (not roasts) of coffee.

In essence, drink up…but make sure you are putting beans in the grinder.

DIY Manual Drip Coffeerack

In an effort to constantly bring you the best coffee possible, Rice Coffeehouse ventured into manual drip coffee territory. Because of the length of time the water is in contact with the grounds, manual drip coffee emerge more flavorful than regular machine brewed coffee. Each cup is made to order so the coffee brewed will be the freshest possible.

This will be no replacement for your daily coffee, but if you have the time to wait a bit, manual drip coffee will show you a new face of the beans you consume. Click on to see some in progress pictures of the simple wooden rack that houses the ceramic drip cones.

Hot, fresh sandwiches
My tummy misses you now
Tears are all I have

No breakfast tacos
No boxed salads or sushi
No face sized muffins

My heart will go on
But, my soul and stomach yearn
For your tasty treats

Summer Coffeehouse Adventures: Marini’s Empanada House

In an effort to explore new food options for new Coffeehouse this fall, the summer team went on an mission to Marini’s Empanada House on Westheimer to taste test this delectable option. According the Marini’s website, Marcelo and Pelusa Marini opened their first restaurant named: “Marini’s Empanada House”, it was located in between Westheimer and Montrose on 1517 Westheimer.  For two decades, the Marini Family grew in business, friends, and fame and were well recognized for their empanadas as being “the best empanadas in the world.” An unfortunate fire displaced their business in 1985. The family business re-opened with the help of their son Sergio Marini and his wife Gabriela.

On Friday the 10th, four hungry summer KOCs descended upon the establishment ready to devour some of those so called “best empanadas in the world” . The selection was impressive and after much deliberation, we each settled on some empanadas that we wanted to try out.
